The Lions tour of Australia: Blog post

We touched down on Australian soil after a punishing 24 hours travelling via Hong Kong to be greeted by the news that The Lions had lost their match against the Brumbies
while we were in the air. The mood of the travelling fans soon brightened along with the day as we were treated to a glorious sunrise over the very
appropriately-named Gold Coast and by the time the coach deposited us at our hotel, temperatures were approaching 21 degrees at the city of Surfers Paradise
– not at all bad for an Australian Winter’s day!
The camaraderie amongst the travelling fans and the friendly banter with the locals in the city is great fun and clearly a big part of any Lions tour. After spending our first full day in Australia watching humpback whales off the coast, it was time to turn our attention to the matter in hand – the rugby. This kicked off with a highly entertaining Eve of the Test Match Q&A session with ex-Lions Andy Nichol (who hosted the event and kindly signed my Pink scarf), Mick Galwey and Richard Hill and ex-Wallaby Elton Flatley.
On the morning of the first Test, the fans staying on the Gold Coast were bussed up into Brisbane where the ‘Sea of Red’ grew through the day, culminating in an electric atmosphere in and around the Suncorp stadium for the first Test against the Wallabies. Nails bitten to the quick, we returned to Surfers Paradise after the first Lions victory – job half done!
