Hello from London Fashion Week!
One of the many confusing things about London Fashion Week is that it is more of a very long weekend than a Monday to Friday affair. So first thing Friday morning, when most other Londoners are winding down, is just the start of a five day fashion marathon during which your average show goer might see 40 new collections, several presentations and maybe attend a party or two along the way.
This season, I’m going to be working on The Daily, a newspaper which is only published during LFW and is given out each day to keep everyone up to speed on emerging trends and news from the shows. It’s going to be a busy few days, filing a few stories a day as well as getting round all the shows. Although it’s chaotic, it’s still incredibly exciting to see what a designer has done and begin to form a picture of what we’ll all be wearing and talking about in six months time.
The people spotting is fun too. There are all the top editors and buyers who come to the shows dressed up in beautiful designer outfits which will undoubtedly be snapped the swarms of street style photographers. Then there is the kind of alternative fashion week which has sprung up in the courtyard of Somerset House where hundreds of bloggers, young designers and fashion students show off their imaginative and often outlandish style. It’s a brilliant sight.
I think Thomas Pink might be on to something this season. Victoria Beckham wore a crisp white shirt to take her bow following her show in New York at the weekend so I’m expecting to spy plenty of copycats during LFW!
It’s a bit of an honour to host the opening show of LFW and today it’s down to Turkish designer Bora Aksu to kick off proceedings. I’m also looking forward to seeing what emerging minimalist designer J.JS Lee has done and will Eudon Choi have a Russian folk band as he did last season? I’ll be keeping you up to speed via Thomas Pink’s Twitter, enjoy!
